On 8 March, 35 Performing Arts Year 8 and Year 9 students embarked on our Performing Arts Expedition to participate at the Adelaide Festival, Fringe Festival & WOMAD.
The five-day expedition included a jam-packed itinerary providing students with the opportunity to experience all that these unique festivals have to offer.
This is Darwin Middle Schools first opportunity to re-connect with these events after the past two years of COVID. With students and staff keen to make this a rewarding and culturally rich experience.
Students participated in nine festival events; some of the highlights were:
WOMADelaide: An iconic open-air festival set in Adelaide’s stunning Botanic Park. This is an award winning celebration of the very best of the World of Music, Arts & Dance. The expedition offered a plethora of artistic experiences for our students along with a unique insight into this diverse industry for those who are keen to explore a future in Performing Arts across Drama, Music and Dance.
Guru Dudu Silent Disco and Walking Tour: Supplied with headphones and wearing their dancing shoes, students enjoyed the hilarious commentary from Guru Dudu and the ABBA dance mix.
Andy Warhol & Photography: A Social Media Art Gallery of South Australia, decades before social media. Warhol’s photographic practice was candid, collaborative and social, attuned to the power of the image to shape his public persona and self-identity. Many of his photographs from the 1970s and 1980s offer behind-the-scenes glimpses into his own life and the lives of friends and celebrities – from Debbie Harry to Muhammad Ali, John Lennon to Liza Minnell.
360 ALLSTARS: students witnessed a phenomenal physical performance exploring all forms of rotation. 360 ALLSTARS connects the street with elite delivering a supercharged urban circus. Boasting a stellar cast of world champion and world record holding artists and athletes, it was a spectacular fusion of artistry merging with street culture.
Recovering from a hectic schedule, Students enjoyed a day touring the Adelaide Hills visiting, Monarto Zoo, Strawberry Picking at Beerenberg Farm, and exploring the attractions of Hahndorf’s Main Street.
This years Performing Art Expedition was a fantastic experience for our Performing Arts students and wonderful for Darwin Middle School to re-connect with the national events calendar. Well done to all those who participated and we look forward to future opportunities in 2024.
